Kelly Burtenshaw Honored with Spirit of PTA Award

Emily Gunderson

A Nebo parent and volunteer at Spanish Oaks Elementary, Kelly Burtenshaw, was recognized with the State Spirit of the PTA award.  She has served in the PTA at Spanish Oaks for the last five years.  Kelly was treasurer, carnival chair, president-elect, and president for two years!  She exemplifies the PTA mission and purpose.  She helps programs at Spanish Oaks to be meaningful for families.  Kelly organizes reading reward activities, the family art night, Reflections contests, book fairs, and Health and Safety week activities.  She has also encouraged a lot of people to join PTA and works really well with our teachers and principal.  Kelly makes a huge, positive impact on Spanish Oaks Elementary.  Thank you, Kelly!

Fourth Grade Utah Program

Our fourth graders have worked hard to prepare a program that teaches us all about Utah history.  With speaking parts and fun songs, we learned about how our State came to be.  They did an excellent job and we really enjoyed the program.  A special thanks to Miss McKendrick, Mrs. Fagergren and Mr. Rigby for all their time and effort!

Rodeo Reading Winners at Spanish Oaks

We had some excited students yesterday as they were presented with a pair of rodeo tickets for this summer for being awesome readers during the past month.  Our winners were:  Lilly Mendez, Kallen Brough, Halle Oakey, Kayson Dimmick, Jessica Bishop, Paige Johnson and Kambree Lewis.  These students read a total of 2,791 minutes during the month of April.  That is the same as 63 hours or 2.5 days.  Pretty impressive!  Our school-wide reading minutes for April totaled 213,286 minutes!  That is even more impressive!  Kallen Brough and Jessica Bishop were then chosen out of the seven to win Justion Boots cowboy boots, Wrangler jeans and a cowboy hat.

Our school reading goal was met and exceeded this year with a total of over 1,800,000+ minutes.  That is amazing, and we get to celebrate this accomplishment on Tuesday with a school-wide reading celebration!  We are all excited for that!  Keep up the amazing reading efforts, Explorers!
