Here at Spanish Oaks, we have a crossing guard who comes before and after school and helps kids safely cross the street. That is not all that this crossing guard does, everyday she gives away handmade hats that she crocheted to the kids. She doesn’t know most of the kids but she still gives away hats to as many kids as she can. Most students just know her as the crosswalk lady or the hat lady. We thought we should give her some appreciation for her amazing acts of kindness, and get to know her a little better.

Her name is Jane Hagner. She is originally from Indiana and moved to Utah 35 years ago. She has been married for 5 years to Ernie Hagner, he loves the kids here and loves coming to help out on cold days. She has 8 kids and 34 grandchildren. In her freetime she loves to crochet and go on her computer. Her favorite vacation she has ever been on was when she went to Tampa Bay, Florida even though on that same trip her motorhome burnt down to the ground! Her car did as well and she had to replace everything in her car. Now she calls her car “the marshmallow” because it looked like a burnt marshmallow.

She wanted to be the crossing guard at our school because she loves kids and thought it would be a fun way to get away for a little while during the day. Jane started giving out hats when it started getting cold. She saw so many kids walking down the hill with no hat.  She started doing it so that all the kids stayed warm and just to be nice.

Spanish Oaks is so lucky to have such an amazing and nice crossing guard.
