The Utah County Fire Department's fire engines were in action Thursday, but it wasn't because of yet another wildfire. Rather, the Utah County Sheriff's Office hosted its annual safety fair for Nebo School District children at the department's base in Spanish Fork. Students from Spanish Oaks Elementary School traveled to the base to learn about the functions and equipment of several different departments under the sheriff's office, including search and rescue, SWAT, K9, wildland fire and the bomb squad. "It affords the students the opportunity to interact with police officers and firemen and go hands-on with the equipment we use with our jobs every day," Sheriff's Lt. Tom Hodgson said. "It's very educational for the students." Suzi Doll, a sixth-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary School, said the school knows the trip as the community heroes field trip. "It's a side of the city that they never get to see," Doll said of the unique opportunity for the students to experience. "It's just fun for them to see what goes on behind the scenes." Hodgson says the sheriff's office is planning to do the same event next year and is already brainstorming ways to improve it.
