The orchestra students at Spanish Oaks had a wonderfully scary time the morning of Halloween practicing and showing off their costumes. "It is very difficult to learn to play a stringed instrument, but they are making tremendous strides," says Mr. Hansen. The young musicians are working on practicing their music diligently for our concert coming up on December 17. They are an awesome bunch and definitely keep it lively!
We are so excited to continue our “Race into Reading” reading program for the 2013-2014 school year. “The goal of the program is to encourage improvement in literacy which will help develop daily and lifelong reading habits, specifically by READING EVERY DAY at least 20 minutes, to improve vocabulary, proficiency, and communication skills” (Garff, 2012). This month we were lucky enough to have a Popcorn/Movie celebration with Mrs. Brown. Next month we will have our Race Into Reading assembly where we will give away two bikes! Don't forget to read and turn in your minutes!
The 3rd grade students in Ms. Sumway's class had the opportunity to pick a famous American that they would like to learn more about. After choosing their person, they checked books out from our library and read them as an introduction. We learned what a biography was and the essential parts included. The students then wrote their reports and picked three things they learned that were most interesting to share. The students each decorated their pumpkins at home in the likeness of their famous American. They were so happy to share their facts and pumpkins! Everyone did such an amazing job presenting in front of our parents!! Pumpkinography was a success!
First thing in the chilly morning on Saturday, October 26, the dedicated staff from Spanish Oaks Elementary participated in Salem's 5th Annual Witches 5K Run and Children's Mile! This is a fundraising event for Salem Hills High School and track teams, open to all comers: age, ability or experience level. There were gift cards for race winners, medals for age groups places, prize drawings for all runners, and prizes for best costumes. Run, Spanish Oaks ... RUN!
* Story Update: Our Spanish Oaks team took 3rd place ... Woo Hoo !
