"Race into Reading" Celebration at Spanish Oaks

Each student at Spanish Oaks Elementary has been working very hard on their reading to collect reading tickets for our January "Race into Reading" Assembly.  So far our amazing students have read over 1,077,000 minutes!!  Our goal for the year is 2,500,000 minutes, with a surprise reward celebration at the end of the year when we reach it.  Lucky winners today shot baskets, dribbled through cones, and had their names drawn for food cards, Jump On It passes and ... lots and lots of BOOKS!  Two grand prize winners left with their very own brand new BIKE!  It definitely pays to READ at Spanish Oaks!

Technology and Reading in 1st Grade

Miss Lybbert's 1st grade class has some exciting things happening with their reading program.  They recently participated in an activity where they used technology to practice reading skills through a digital read aloud!   http://youtu.be/Uph2TkWD6ag.   These 1st grade super readers also get to come read with Mrs. Brown for reaching their reading goals!  Thank you, Miss Lybbert ... It's a great day to be in 1st grade!

Arts EXTRA at Spanish Oaks

Students in first through sixth grade who are interested in the arts have signed up for the Spanish Oaks ARTS EXTRA Explorers.  Working with parents and faculty, these students will meet for 4 weeks to work on their artwork.  The group will explore drawing basics, use of a sketchbook, and discover various artists, styles, and techniques.  They will work toward an exhibition of their work and, as teams, to develop an art idea to share at the PTA Family Arts Evening on January 31st.  A special thank you to our wonderful Mrs. Aagard and the many parent helpers for making this opportunity possible!

Teacher Spotlight: Jerika Terry

Miss Jerika Terry is one of our awesome third grade teachers!  She was born and raised in Spanish Fork Utah.  Her mom, dad, big sister, and little brother like to vacation in California in the Bay area or at Disney Land.  Hawaii was fun, and Europe is next on her list.  She loves to read ... Gone with the Wind and The Hiding Place are some of her favorite books.

Reading, running, cooking, and watching movies are some of her favorite pastimes.  Jerika also loves Dr. Pepper, chips and salsa, brownies, pasta, and tacos.

We love that Miss Terry reads with our third graders, and the way she teaches math and science!  But most of all, we love her happy smiling face!  it is absolutely contagious!  We are so lucky to have Miss Terry at our school!

Mrs. Brown Honored with PEAK Award

Spanish Oaks Elementary's very own Mrs. Brown was honored with Nebo School District's PEAK (Positive Energy and Kindness) Award on December 11, 2013 at the December Board Meeting.

In her nomination, Mrs. DeAnn Carter said, “Kali has only been our principal for a short time, but every situation that she has had to deal with (and there have been some difficult ones already), she has turned it into a positive learning situation.  To quote a student after he came out of her office, ‘That's a nice principal’.”

Do you know someone in Nebo School District who really exhibits Positive Energy and Kindness?  http://www.nebo.edu/peak
